The Empire of Imagination and Science of Rudolf II

This exhibition is based on the collection of Rudolf II, the Holy Roman Emperor from 1552 to 1612. He loved both science and art and was devoted to collecting all types of artifacts, his cabinet of curiosities, from the natural world. This treasure trove allowed artists, like Giuseppe Arcimboldo, to create art, under Rudolf’s patronage, that realistically represented plants and animals from all over the world. This exhibition pairs nicely with last year’s Arcimboldo exhibit at The National Museum of Western Art and includes paintings, engravings, maps, books, and other objects.
