Gustav Klimt: Vienna – Japan 1900

Gustav Klimt: Vienna – Japan 1900

In a nutshell

This exhibition centers around the life and work of the Vienna master, Gustav Klimt. There are over 25 oil paintings (the most ever on display in Japan), a full size reproduction of his famous Beethoven Frieze, sketches, portraits, landscapes and more on view. Works by Klimt’s partners and contemporaries present a picture of Vienna at the turn of the 20th century, including Klimt’s role in the Secession. The exhibition also highlights the impact of Japonism, beginning with 1873 World Exposition held in Vienna, on Klimt and his work.

The venue

The exhibition is spread out over three floors of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum.

English? (labels/audio guides/handouts)

All of the information (list of works, Introduction and chapter panels, title cards) is in English except for the extended captions, none of which are translated. Highly recommend getting the English audio guide, which provides quite a bit of supplemental information that would be unavailable otherwise.
