Galleries can be tough -- they’re not always welcoming spaces and sometimes the art can be challenging. But if you want to see newer art, the type of stuff that isn’t always on view in museums, galleries can be a great way to see lots of different types of art. And see it for free.
Visiting galleries that are in close proximity to other galleries makes sense. Galleries in Tokyo run on the small side and hauling across town to visit just one, you may end up seeing just a handful of in one room, which can be a bit of a disappointment. Luckily complex665, Piramide and GALLERY Momo are just a few steps from each other, located right next to Roppongi Hills, and offer nine great galleries to visit.
The galleries do not coordinate their exhibitions; they don’t start and stop on the same schedule. Check the gallery websites (links below) to ensure that most of them have exhibitions up on the day you’d like to visit.
In general, galleries allow photographs.
Most galleries have handouts in both English and Japanese. If you are interested in purchasing an item, there should be a price list and if there isn’t one, just ask.
